New years retreat - Preliminary Daily Program:
We will start our day before breakfast, with a yoga class in the sunrise led by Mariama Camara (Kundalini/Yin/Vinyasa)
After breakfast we will dance for about one hour and let the West African music and joy flow into our bodies with live drums played by professional musicians. Dance sessions will be led by a talented dance teacher from the region.
After lunch you will have your own Ocean Time or time to discover the daily life in the village or, if you prefer, deepening in your self, music and dance.
The second session of the day takes place in the late afternoon, before sunset and dinner and will be a variation of music/singing/yoga/dancing/meditation and reflections.
After dinner we will light the fire and enjoy music, evening concerts, jamming, singing and sharing together.
There will also be opportunities to visit the vibrant cultural festival Abene Festivalo and dance your legs off.
*(On new year's Eve and first day of the new year, we will have a slightly different program).
All regular activities are included in the price and are of course voluntary to suit your preference and taste.
*Note that this is a preliminary program and can be a subject to change.
*Yoga teaching is in English/Swedish. Dance teaching is in English or any of the local languages, interpreted into English/Swedish.
set your intentions for the new year and the new decade!
yoga and workshops with Mariama camara
We are so proud and happy to invite Mariama Camara to join us in Senegal for our second New Years Retreat, it will be a bliss!
Mariama's background is mixed, from Mali and Sweden. Growing up in Sweden, she always felt a deep connection with West Africa. She's danced her whole life, carrying the ancestral vibes through her Swedish circumstances. Today she runs a dance and yoga centre in Järna, Sweden, where she lives with her husband and three children. She's absolutely thrilled to be able to share her love for dance and yoga through instructing at the Jaliya Camp retreat.
Free spirit yoga
Mariama's Free Spirit yoga connects two different yoga forms into one: Yin yoga, which focuses more on the physical aspects of your body; the skeleton, connective tissue and inner organs. And Kundalini, which works more in the spiritual realm and is a potent and transformative yoga form that aims to resolve inner conflict, and bring you closer to your true self.
This yoga form brings breath and movement into a dynamic flow, which cleanses and strengthens the inner organs. Through Mariama's guidance we'll stimulate the blood circulation and the lymphatic system, which helps the body to clean out toxins and stay healthy. Classes that enhances your strength and flexibility.
Mariama will give two workshops on different themes:
The first one, by the end the year, is on the theme of Gratitude. The second one, in the very beginning of the new year, is on the theme Let in/Let go.
What do we want to bring into our lives? What is no longer serving us?
Both workshops will weave together dance, yoga and sharing.
Let’s dive in to 2020 with a free spirit!
sousou & maher cissoko
We both grew up in families of musicians, Maher in Senegal and Sousou in Sweden and it was the interest and love for the West African kora (a harp lute) that brought us together. Since the day we met we have been blessed with two children, toured together in more than 30 countries and released four albums. Bringing people together has always been one of our main missions and being able to welcome you to our second home Jaliya Camp is a dream come true!
So welcome to experience the rich West African music traditions with the kora and our voices as companions, in an unique combination with free spirit yoga and new years reflections with Mariama Camara.
If you have been longing for dancing, jamming, singing and enjoying kora music and yoga, accompanied by the sound of the ocean and crickets a starry night in Senegal this is for you!
With many years of experience of West African music we offer you a workshop experience full of adventure, soul and sunshine combined with yoga, singing and dancing.

20 trees planted to restore the mangrove in the Casamance (Tobor)* -
*Over-harvesting, the construction of infrastructures and the drought during the 1980’s are the major factors that led to the degradation of 25% of the Senegalese mangrove between 1980 and 2010. Thanks to it awareness-raising measures and its actions in reforestation, Oceanium contributes to restoring this ecosystem (more than 10 000 ha to this day). With this we are giving back to the nature and contributing to restoring the forest cover and biodiversity, fixing the soils and reducing coastal erosion, climate regulation and fight against climate change thanks to large amounts of carbon dioxide being absorbed by growing trees.
THE RETREAT FEE DOES NOT INCLUDE:
Flights, extra hotel night in the Gambia if needed, drinks (except bottle water), travel insurances, vaccinations, single rooms, private classes or excursions outside the schedule or any other personal expenses.
